Our first railtour of 2026 is to the Royal station of Windsor & Eton Riverside.
This wintertime outing is 174 miles long — our more ambitious trips take place in summertime when the duration of daylight is greater. We will pick up passengers at our usual stops from Hastings to Tonbridge, then Bromley South, and during reversal at London Waterloo. We are scheduled to have well over 2 hours in Windsor, whose Riverside station is within 5 minutes’ walk of both Windsor Castle and the bridge over the River Thames leading into Eton village.
This railtour is named to honour the memory of Rosemary Gainsbury who passed away in late October 2025 after deteriorating health over recent years. Rosemary initially started helping us with various tasks, following in the footsteps of her son Andrew and husband Paul. She progressed into running the catering on our railtours, and served as a Director of HDL for 25 years! Her contribution to the company today is hard to overstate.
Funds are being raised in memory of Rosemary, to support Parkinson’s UK. The proceeds from our usual on-board raffle during our Windsor railtour will also be donated to this charity.
Our Buffet car will be open all day for the sale of hot & cold food and drink at reasonable prices. A trolley service of hot & cold drinks and refreshments will operate in Standard Class areas.
In First Class an inclusive at-table service of drinks and light refreshments is offered through the day, with tea/coffee and toast after boarding, sandwiches prior to arrival, and savoury biscuits with cheese & wine as we return from Windsor.

From the Hastings Line up to Tonbridge we continue on the South Eastern Main Line as far as Petts Wood Junction, joining the Chatham Main Line at Bickley and calling at Bromley South. We continue via Penge Tunnel and the Brixton area to Linford Street Junction where we take the curve (built for international trains to access the original Eurostar station at Waterloo from 1994) onto the South West Main Line into London Waterloo.
Following reversal at Waterloo, we are being routed direct down the Windsor line through Twickenham to Staines, and onward to Windsor & Eton Riverside station which dates from 1849 and is a Listed Building.
The return leg of this railtour is similar to the outward.
A sketch-map of the route has been prepared by Alan Pink. To illustrate the detail of our scheduled route, annotated extracts from Network Rail’s Sectional Appendix have been produced for the outward and return portions of this railtour (updated 12 January 2026).
Finalised timings have been published. Compared to our original estimates, departure times are very similar; we also have slightly longer to spend in Windsor than originally foreseen.
This page and the leaflet have both been updated to show the finalised timings. To avoid any confusion, please ensure that you check these finalised timings prior to arranging your itinerary.
