Rubric

Trains in service are shown using heavy type, and call at all intermediate stations except where otherwise noted. Journeys in italics are not in passenger service. The trains begin and end their diagrams at St. Leonards Depot, between Bopeep Junction and Bexhill, to where they also travel mid-diagram (except on Sundays) for refuelling. Layovers are taken after certain journeys on Mondays to Fridays at Park Sidings, between Hastings station and Mount Pleasant Tunnel on the way to Ore.

Changes from the previous edition:

Mondays to Fridays

Three units are required to run a full Monday-to-Friday service, and their three Diagrams are laid out here.

Saturdays

975 mostly exists as a Spare train, simply covering the 0824 and 1924 Hastings to Ashford trips, giving both other diagrams time to go for refuelling. The rest of the day is spent laying over at St. Leonards Depot.

Sundays

The diagrams for Sundays are, on the face of it at least, considerably less complicated: two trains are “in steam”, working essentially similar duties an hour apart. There is no mid-diagram refuelling.

Unit-swap paths to Selhurst

From time to time trains need to be sent between St. Leonards and Selhurst depots, as Empty Coaching Stock. HDL’s DEMU is unlikely to be required at Selhurst, though for a test run or ‘turning trip’ such a path might be used by it.

On weekdays, the path from Hastings to Selhurst now runs as required; it leaves Hastings at 1943 (as before—see the old 901 diagram) and returns from Selhurst at 2250; it reverses at Eastbourne (0025-0030) and Hastings (0104-0112), arriving at St. Leonards at 0123.

On Sunday evenings, there’s a path written into the timetable for use as required, to allow a unit at St. Leonards Depot to be sent to Selhurst. This leaves at 2243, reverses at Hastings (2249-2254), reverses again at Eastbourne (2316-2322) and arrives at Selhurst Depot at 0054.

The balancing working occurs on Monday mornings, when the Selhurst to Eastbourne path now runs as required (dep Selhurst 0320, booked to run via Brighton (0439-0445), arr Eastbourne 0524); a relic from the previous set of diagrams is used, in the form of the ECS path from Eastbourne to St. Leonards Depot at 0855.
